Kimberly Sawyer, 2010 Miss Wisconsin
In this year alone, Americans volunteered 100 million more hours than they did the year before. We, as a nation, decided not to turn away from our problems but to face them head on and help each other in any way possible. This has given me an abundance of faith in our people and the future of our country. Even in tough economic times, we can build bridges, make a difference and contribute to the character of our communities one volunteer at a time.
The benefits of volunteerism are not only reaped by those receiving the service, but by the volunteers as well. A volunteer can gain work experience, build a social network, enhance a resume, or just feel that sense of accomplishment. In order to inspire more Wisconsin residents to become civically engaged, it is imperative that each individual volunteer find a “Service for the Soul,” a cause or organization that they can be passionate about. By finding this match, an individual will truly enjoy their experience, encouraging them to come back for more. This matching of a volunteer and their interests and goals with an organization is something that is often overlooked, but when done correctly will ensure a larger and more stable volunteer base.
Throughout my own journey as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, I have realized that many do not know where to look or how to find opportunities that fit their interests. That is why I have created my own webpage (www.service4thesoul.org) that will now be merged with the Miss Wisconsin site so that anyone can quickly and easily access volunteer opportunities in their area. Please use these volunteer resource links to find an organization that you can connect with and become a life-long volunteer.
Wisconsin is currently ranked thirteenth in the nation in terms of volunteerism, let’s make it number one!!!
